Her name was Arizona Donnie Barker, but she was
nicknamed Kate. Her four grim and lanky boys, who always seemed to be in
her kitchen, just called her "Ma".
It was the Depression, and decent people kept ahold of everything they
had, never knowing if they'd ever get anything else. The Barkers were no
different, even though few would call them decent people. They knocked
about the midwest and south like true vagabonds, dragging their family
furniture with them wherever they went. None too carefully either.
When Ma would cook, she'd plop the staple foods on a side table (like
this one), as long and lean as her last ten years, and when Herman,
Arthur, Fred and Lloyd had all pushed up a chair, she'd transfer the
chipped china bowls and blue enameled tureens to the eatin' table. That
side table had but one drawer for the boys to put their tools in while
they ate. No matter-they might need them in a hurry- dinner was often a
hurried and interrupted affair.
So they kept their pistols and bullets right on top, next to the
potatoes. Look closely and you can almost see the scratches.
